Sri Lanka, gem of the Indian Ocean, famous for its palm fringed golden beaches, tropical climate and some of the friendliest people you'll meet in the world. This exotic paradise offers fantastic surf for all levels set to a backdrop of beautiful landscapes, colourful wildlife and a rich cultural heritage.
Having spent the majority of the last 15 years in Sri Lanka Lee and Anji opened Sion Surf Camp in 2014 to share our love of this tropical paradise with you. We have the best location in the charming surf town of Ahangama, South Sri Lanka, our beach camp is in front of Devil Rock which delivers consistent left and right handers all day long and provides great snorkelling. Ahangama which is still largely undeveloped, is nestled halfway between the busier spots of Unawatuna and Mirrisa. We have a wide range of breaks for both beginners and experienced surfers on our doorstep. From our favourite wave literally 10 steps from your room, various friendly reef breaks minutes away, the renowned break 'The Rock' 5 minutes north at Kabalana bay and the ever popular beach break of Weligama is only 10 minutes to the south.
Daily sunrise and sunset yoga classes are held on our peaceful roof top lagoon terrace, perfect for stretching those tired muscles after a hard days surf!
With 6 rooms at our beach front camp and we definitely have something to suit everyone.
Our beach camp offers shared rooms, ideal for making new friends if travelling solo, also double / twin and a family rooms. With the sea breezes these rooms only require fan cooling. 4 beach rooms are en-suite with sea views to check the morning surf from your private balcony or patio. Our new container rooms have 1 shared and 1 double both with private balconies. These are both AC with ensuite bathrooms
A typical day starts with an early morning yoga session before breakfast, which is served in our beach front restaurant. Here you will find a selection of tea, real coffee, fresh fruit, local or western breakfast to your choice. Once energised we hit the best beach for morning lessons with prevailing conditions including swell and wind direction. After lunch we are back surfing, with our instructors on hand to give you pointers or if you prefer you can relax in a hammock at the camp soaking up the rays or visit once of the many local attractions which include temples, tea plantation, the historical unesco Galle Fort, snake or turtle sanctuaries to name a few.
A sunset yoga session will stretch those muscles or sometimes a cold Lion beer watching the sun go down has the same relaxing effect for those with less energy.
We all get together for a dinner of mouth watering exquisite curries prepared with locally sourced ingredients or our famous Friday seafood bbq. After dinner our instructors will go over the days session in small groups so you can speed up your progress the next day. How you spend the rest of your evening is then up to you - chill with other guests over a cold beer or cocktail, watching a surf movie on the big screen, getting to grips with the famous local game karrom, catch up on emails with our free wifi or venture out and experience the local nightlife.
Wednesday night is our big night out where we head out to one of the many beach restaurants and then onto a lively beach party depending of the location you can dance the night away with sand in your toes and sea lapping at your feet, knowing that you have rest day to recover on Thursday.
Keeping it local
Having spent so many years in Ahangama we really feel part of the local community and like to give something back. We do this by hiring local staff, buying our produce from local market stalls and donations to various local community projects and our local temple.
We do not sell plastic water bottles at our bar & restaurant but give away free filtered water to reduce the use of plastic water bottles, we also separate our waste for recycling.
